I don't disagree: the Palestinians do have an unfortunate tendency to saddle themselves with ratbags as leaders. It's not six of one and half-a-dozen of the other, though: when all is said and done, the Palestinians are the victims, and Israel is the oppressor.

By default. Israel was saddled with the Palestinians in 1967 after the combined Arab forces of Egypt, Jordan and Syria sought to obliterate it, the disputed territories of the West Bank never having been given the slightest degree of independence or autonomy by the controlling power on the ground since 1948, Jordan (so much for Arab fraternity.) And I say 'disputed territories' and not the stock trope 'occupied territories' as the West Bank never constituted a sovereign state so it cannot have been 'occupied' by legal definition.

And that creates problems with your new avatar - Israel is not an 'apartheid state' within the original terms of that expression as the Arab citizens of Israel have the same rights as the rest whereas the Arabs in the West Bank and Gaza are not citizens of Israel, although they do have their own representative authorities (albeit not very democratic - see above.) The use of the term 'apartheid' is a total misnomer.

Oh, and as for boycotts, they never brought down the authentically ultra-racist South African apartheid regime, which imploded for other more tangible reasons.

Israel started the '67 war, by bombing Egyptian airstrips.

Check your history - the surrounding Arab nations were making threatening noises in the months before the Six Day War and Nasser was mobilising his huge forces and talking openly about annihilating the 'Jewish state'. He also took certain steps which could only be interpreted as a prelude to invasion. Syria and Jordan put their own armies in a state of preparation for attack. Israel did what was logical strategically (and for its own survival) - they made a pre-emptive attack on Egypt's powerful air force. After the short, sharp war, the belligerent Arab states remained intact despite military defeat, but had they won, Israel would have been obliterated - and after the experience of the Holocaust, the Israelis had said 'never again'.

But when all's said and done, Israel fired the first shots, contrary to what many people believe.

Well, indeed, there are many misconceptions about historical events. The fact is, though, that when it comes to survival, the old saw - attack is the best form of defence - cuts through any notions of chivalry.

Greetings Val  *

If that is a war crime I would like to know if the clinic was occupied or did it contain weapons. We know the other side kept weapons where women and children gathered, in private homes, schools and mosques.

What is a war crimes is the blowing up of innocents by suicide bombers Nothing is said about that!

* I thought I was in Dublin yesterday..what with the Irish accents on stage and the Irish music.

Changing the subject, the favourite tactic of Israel's defenders. No-one's trying to defend terrorists.

Terrorist scum are terrorist scum no matter which side they are on and should be treated as such, The deliberate act of shelling a clinic as a salute to dead colleague is a war crime, this is not the first or only incident
