Jobs trump the Environment.

Ah yes, the Canadian oil sands, that demon that must be attacked by everyone from Greenpeace to oil sheiks from Saudi Arabia.
What a God send the hidden resources are to Canadians.Their development enables us to live prosperous lives. It means employment for thousands and a higher standard of living for all. When the fisheries closed down in Newfoundland, in the 1990's the able men of the province flew more than a thousand miles to work in the oil fields of Alberta, fetching their wives and children to join them once they had a home.
Anyone who has been unemployed (as I have at one time) knows what emotional misery that can cause you.And if married how upsetting it is to the wife. It can in many cases lead to divorce.
The most important thing in life is the feeling of self worth you get because you are employed, to stay off welfare, all of which are good for human dignity.
Our Province of Ontario owes most of its prosperity to the auto industry ( and a favorable auto pact with the Americans) . It's continued success depends on a supply of oil to fuel our vehicles, whether they be Smart economy cars or gas guzzling monsters. We need Alberta, and they need us.
Without the jobs that oil and Autos provide we will revert to the stone age, and become hewers of wood and drawers of water.
No amount of propaganda about the environment, of glossy page National Geographic article condemnation will have any effect on us.People with jobs who can afford to live in relative prosperity, maintain the first class nature of our universities, electronic technology, hospitals and schools trump a green environment of windmills, unemployment and misery every time.
Let nothing disturb you.
Let nothing make you afraid.
All things are passing.
God alone never changes.
Patience gains all things.
If you have God you will want for nothing.
God alone suffices.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about employment Pondero. But there is a very good reason why the oil sands should not be touched.
