Oddfellows

Does this sound familiar over there?

Over here, the Oddfellows society (mainly of men, but it did include women) was established in the colonial America as a charitable organization. I read that Oddfellows organizations began in England.

It still exists, I think, a bit like the Round Table, but nowadays, if it hasn't fizzled out completely, much smaller. I remember in my early teens being highly amused by seeing a large Victorian building in Manchester called 'Oddfellows' Hall', which presumably dated from the days of their pomp, when they could afford to build imposing buildings for themselves.

Interesting. I read somewhere they got their name because the first men gathered together with only a benevolent, altruistic, philanthropic motive, which most people found odd at the time. :D

"over there?"

"there" being... ? (you have several countries at your disposal! )

Right! England this time. But, now that you mention it, DG, is there such an organization in Australia?

We have oddfellows here too. Just walk around Toronto during rush hour, or just travel by subway and you'll see them all.

We also have official branches of Oddfellows according to Wikipedia in most Provinces.
Let nothing disturb you.
Let nothing make you afraid.
All things are passing.
God alone never changes.
Patience gains all things.
If you have God you will want for nothing.
God alone suffices.
