On the subject of food, we in Canada have just been criticized by The UN Special Rapporteur, Olivier De Schutter. He incorrectly said that one in ten families with a child under six were unable to meet their daily food requirements. He also said that this was unacceptable, and we should adopt a national right to food strategy, and that malnutrition was getting worse.
Statistics Canada figures on food poverty show that in 2004 the percentage was 9.2% and that things had improved by 2008 when the percentage of such families dropped to 7.7%.
Schutter ought to get his facts right before commenting. He was not welcomed in Canada by the government for his unfair criticisms and should let us govern ourselves freely. We do not subscribe to his definition of Human Rights, or his socialistic viewpoint.

God alone suffices.

About potatoes, apparently it is one of a few foodstuffs that you could live off alone as they provide almost all the different vitamins and minerals that we need to eat.

And bananas, too, I believe -- though their price fluctuates so wildly as to make them maybe not very useful for this experiment.

Right now, because the price of potatoes varies, 10lbs of potatoes can be purchased for $4.00, while in October when they are harvested you can get 10 lbs of potatoes for $1.99.
$1.60 = £1, (You do the conversions  )

Just remembered this thread and thought I would say I am still living on less than a pound a day (when John isn't here), with regard to eating. Obviously electricity and gas etc are a different matter but I haven't so far found it difficult as far as eating is concerned.

Now I have an allotment, and excluding home brewed wine and beer, I think I'm going to go for this challenge for the longer term. It excludes bills, right? And it may take me some time to get set up - seeds, and plants, and tools and stuff. But I think it's a good objective to aim at, if I'm not depriving myself more than the beneficiaries of the extent of any charity I might be able to donate if I can manage to live on such a small budget.

Cheers, 2RM.

It's easy for me because I don't care that much about food. I bought two bananas today.

Only two, Vix? Why not go for one or two more, like the ineffable Carmen Miranda here? :D

Or perhaps combine them with other fruit...

Yeah, I would look lovely.

No point in buying loads of food that will go off before I have the chance to eat it.
