When they crash...

Postby GregB » May 29th, 2017, 7:20 am

Computers are a remarkable invention but we've come to depend on them so much that when an entire system crashes, chaos ensues, as we're seeing these days with British Airways (for many frustrated passengers, BA probably stands for Bloody Awful now.) What with all those cyberattacks as well, it all seems pretty fragile.

One way of using nuclear weapons in war is to explode a powerful bomb high above enemy territory. It wouldn't kill people directly, but it would knock out electronics over a vast area, which in the present day would leave the enemy defenceless.

Yes, that's known as Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse, or NEMP (or just EMP.) As well as leaving the enemy defenceless, it would affect all electronically-based systems and potentially result in societal chaos, on a massive scale if the USA was the target, presumably by Iran or North Korea.

What, I wonder blocked out all British Airways electronic communication system yesterday, ? Maybe it was the actions of Kim Jong Un of North Korea.

Unlikely. After all, what advantage would that give him in his megalomaniac thirst for global power? No, whatever the real cause, it's not out of the question that it's due to some total incompetence on the part of the responsible British commercial airline entities.
