You are right there Pondy but looking through history, both long past and recent, there have been many megalomaniac rulers who adhered to be religious, who have committed atrocites. There are far more people, both religious and not, who would never dream of doing such things but psychopaths come in all guises.

Val: "You will never hear atheists criticising Christianity, Muslim or any other faith system, we might however get annoyed about the dealings of certain denominations such as Christianity or Islam etc."

Not true Val, there are plenty of atheists who are rude, sneering, offensive and extremely argumentative in a volatile way towards people of religion. They have no sensitivity or respect. I accept that many are as you describe and you are fortunate to not have encountered the former.

According to Irish surveys of recent years between 2 and 5% call themselves atheist. I wonder where all those doctors, lawyers teachers come from who, according to Val , are atheist. The majority then are not atheist.

Maybe the random samples were not wide enough, Pondy. Or maybe Val is speaking about people of his acquaintance. It is surprising that he knows, over here no-one talks about religion or atheism at work or in social situations. Books are written of course.

Erm....

I suppose that's strictly true in the sense that you rarely hear atheists criticizing faith systems because most zealous atheists are overweight, basement-dwelling, neck-bearded keyboard warriors; so you're more likely to read their aspie diatribes, as they're usually too socially inept and/or cowardly to engage in a face-to-face conversation.
It's later than you think!

I'm not sure about your description of atheists, Theo, they come in all guises, however they are often quite vocal against religions and those they consider to be religious. Val is fortunate if he hasn't come across them.

(Good to see you btw, we get fed up on here talking amongst ourselves!)
