WTF?!

Postby Sprocket » April 23rd, 2017, 9:30 pm

Now it's the frogs being madder than a box of - er - frogs. Macron v. Le Pen? After President Trump and Bresit, President Le Pen is a real possibility. The world's gone mad - mad, I tell you.
Brendan Behan once went on a lecture tour of Canada. On his arrival, a reporter asked him why he'd come to Canada. Behan replied "I saw an advert that said 'Drink Canada Dry', and I thought 'I'll try anything once!'"

Hopefully Le Pen won't garner enough votes in the second round. Those who voted for the other candidates are unlikely to give her their vote, certainly not those on the left (though she does have a degree of working class support in some areas) while those who voted for Fillon will probably now vote for Macron, as will the more moderate voters on the left.

I think Macron is a good candidate of the centre right, avoiding the extremes of left or right. He is untainted by political party associations (he's founded his own) and has a lot of economic experience, important now with France's stagnant economy and the lacklustre presidency of the ineffectual Hollande. He's also pro-European Union, unlike Le Pen who wants to do a 'Frexit', and his presidency should help to stabilise the situation created by the UK's departure and the anti-EU tendencies in some of the other member states (notably those in Eastern Europe, led by Hungary.)

'A Mad World, My Masters', the title of Thomas Middleton's 1608 play. Well, it always has been. To slightly paraphrase Henry Ford, history is just one damned lunacy after another.
