“It is sinful to give up sadness. We are exiles on earth. Exiles do not wonder at insult and injury. We are under God’s penance and a penance consists of deprivations and difficulties. We are ill in soul and body and bitter medicine is useful for the ill.”

~ St. Theophilus of the Kiev Caves

“Study, my child, to acquire in your life dignity, simplicity, understanding, continuous prayer, manliness, unfeigned love, wisdom, seemliness. Be sympathetic, love the poor. Attain silence and patient endurance. Do not slander, do not laugh at anyone. Acquire angerlessness, modestly, and humility, so that the Lord will glorify you before the angels and the saints.”

On Reading and Applying Holy Scripture

“When reading the Holy Scriptures, he who is humble and engaged in spiriutal work will apply everything to himself and not to someone else.”

"Do all in your power not to fall, for the strong athlete should not fall. But if you do fall, get up again at once and continue the contest. Even if you fall a thousand times because of the withdrawal of God's grace, rise up again each time, and keep on doing so until the day of your death. For it is written, 'If a righteous man falls seven times' - that is, repeatedly throughout his life - seven times 'shall he rise again' (Prov. 24:16)."

St. John of Karpathos

"Those who are trying to lead a spiritual life have to carry on a most skillful and difficult warfare, through their thoughts, every moment of their life - that is, a spiritual warfare; it is necessary that our whole soul should be every moment a clear eye, able to watch and notice the thoughts entering our heart from the evil one and repel them; the hearts of such men should be always burning with faith, humility and love..."

“Don’t let satan enter your home, throw him out. Much does satan love to dissolve marriages and families. And so when it occurs you are not responsible, because satan makes you believe that you are responsible and you are tormented unjustly”

Abba John, who had been exiled by the Emperor Marcian, said, “We went to Syria one day to see Abba Poemen and we wanted to ask him about purity of heart. But the old man did not know Greek and no interpreter could be found. So, seeing our embarrassment, the old man began to speak Greek saying,

The nature of water is soft, that of stone is hard; but if a bottle is hung above the stone, allowing the water to fall drop by drop, it wears away the stone. So it is with the word of God; it is soft and our heart is hard, but the man who hears the word of God often, opens his heart to the fear of God.’”

~Ward, Sayings of the Desert Fathers, p. 192-3.

A rambunctious man told an elderly monk … "I don’t believe there is a God.”

“Come near me,” the monk said. “Don’t you know that the cicada you hear singing this moment is telling about God? Don’t you see my little kitten’s fur, how it is? Not even Queen Frederika owned a coat like this.”

The young man was moved by the elder’s words. The hardness of his unbelief vanished.
