Short quotes from fellow-pilgrims

Postby different glory » March 31st, 2010, 9:08 am

God forgive them that raise an ill report upon the sweet cross of Christ. It is but our weak and dim eyes, and our looking only to the black side that makes us mistake. Those who can take that crabbed tree handsomely upon their back, and fasten it on cannily, shall find it such a burden as wings unto a bird, or sails to a ship.

(Samuel Rutherford, seventeenth century Scottish pastor and preacher.)
That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works. - Psalm 26

Hush, for God is here ...

Enter this door
As if the floor
Within were gold,
And every wall
of jewels all
of wealth untold;
As if a choir
in robes of fire
were singing here;
Nor shout, nor rush,
But hush...
For God is here.

(Engraved on the doors of some old churches of the Church of England)

God has created me to do Him some definite service;
He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another.
I have my mission—I never may know it in this life,
But I shall be told it in the next…..

I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons.
He has not created me for naught. I shall do good, I shall do His work;
I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it, if I do but keep His commandments.
Therefore I will trust Him. Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away.
If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him;
In perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him;
If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him….
He does nothing in vain…
He knows what He is about.

He may take away my friends, He may throw me among strangers,
He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide the future from me – still He knows what He is about.

(John Henry Newman, from Meditations on Christian Doctrine)
That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works. - Psalm 26

The proud man thinks he can comprehend everything with his mind. The Lord does not grant this…The Lord does not manifest Himself to the proud soul. Pride is difficult to detect in oneself, but the Lord leaves the proud to be tormented by their impotence until they humble themselves.

I've read things from him before which have resonated with me
he reminds me of a favourite of mine

from William Gurnall (1617-1679) 'The Christian in Full Armour'

"The hope of salvation supports the believer in the greatest afflictions. The Christian's patience is his back where he carries his burdens. Some afflictions are so heavy that he needs a broad back to carry them. But, if hope does not lay the pillow of the promise between his back and his burden, the least cross will prove too much. Therefore, this is called the patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ."

'Hope is the handkerchief that God puts into His people's hands, to wipe the tears from their eyes, which their present troubles, and long stay of expected mercies, draw from them
I don’t want to be known for the things I’m against, but for the things I am for... but....A person who loves flowers will hate weeds

The rich are in possession of the goods of the poor, even if they have acquired them honestly or inherited them legally.
John Chrysostom, 347-407
Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.
