On hymns:

"When, indeed, the Holy Spirit saw that the human race was guided only with difficulty toward virtue, and that, because of our inclination toward pleasure, we were neglectful of an upright life, what did He do? The delight of melody He mingled with the doctrines so that by the pleasantness and softness of the sound heard we might receive without perceiving it the benefit of the words"

I act as a man sitting under a tree who looks attentively around him. This man as soon as he sees wild beasts coming towards him to eat him, immediately climbs up the tree, and the animals, after coming up to the tree, walk around for a while and go away.

And I, as soon as I observe mental beasts coming toward me in passionate thoughts, immediately rise up in my mind to the Lord, the beasts cannot get to me, and they are forced to scatter every which way.

You will find stability at the moment when you discover that God is everywhere, that you do not need to seek God elsewhere, that God is here, and if you do not find God here it is useless to go and search elsewhere because it is not God that is absent from us, it is we who are absent from God...This is important because it is only at the moment you recognise this that you can truly find the fullness of the Kingdom of God in all its richness within you.

The soul that makes bold concerning Christ invokes Him and is not in the least afraid, does not fight alone, but alongside the fearsome King, Jesus Christ, Creator of all that exists, corporeal and incorporeal, visible and invisible.

If man does not pray, he can never be changed or renewed, and he who is not changed or renewed can have no genuine or effective relationship with Christ. His worship, however active, is nothing but an outward protrusion or a superficial growth. In the end it breaks off, bearing no fruit.

You should not wait until you are cleansed of wandering thoughts before
you desire to pray; such distraction is not banished from the mind except
by assiduous prayer requiring much labour. If you only begin to pray when
you see that your mind has become perfect and exalted above all
recollection of the world, then you will never pray...

Even if we have thousands of acts of great virtue to our credit, our confidence in being heard must be based on God's mercy and His love for men. Even if we stand at the very summit of virtue, it is by mercy that we shall be saved.

Whatever you do against your brother who has wronged you, will become an obstacle during your prayer.

Do not pray for your heart's desires,
for they may not entirely harmonize
with God's purposes.
Pray instead as you have been taught:
"May your will be done in me."
Pray to God this way about everything,
that His will might be accomplished in you,
for he only desires what is good and useful
for your life,
whereas you do not always request this.
