You may have read a few months ago about a Syrian refugee in Beirut photographed carrying his sleeping daughter over his shoulder as he sold pens in the street to raise money for subsistence. The photo was widely seen on the Internet and money started being raised internationally to help this man. Now, the story has had a happy end, as this article and video explain - a good news story from a Middle East plagued by war and terrorism. i wish all the best for this good man and his daughter.

Well, there's one good news lurking in the prayer section. :) But here's a second one:

From 3.5 million cases a year down to 22 - and very possibly total eradication (of the disease) in the near future. Wow!

Yes, that's very good news, above all from a region plagued by so many woes. (And at least one good thing to come from Jimmy Carter!)

The link - mainly video - is about a young girl from one of the poorest parts of India who has become a successful medal-winning gymnast through sheer pluck and determination.

She's from Tripura! It's like Manipur, where Sharmila comes from - one of the very neglected and oppressive* "Seven Sister" states of India - yes, terrific to be seeing/hearing this story, Greg. Thank you!

*(Except in Tripura, last year they finally lifted the legislation which is what Sharmila is protesting about in Manipur - which is great because it shows what's possible.)

Remarkable. Also, sobering to realise that without Auschwitz and the Holocaust, many others like him would have reached a ripe old age, too.

Indeed. It did occur to me that his remarkable longevity is two fingers raised to the Nazis.

Medal winners at the Olympics deserve their hard-won prizes, which they can cherish for the rest of their lives. Here's one good man, though, who has decided to put his medal to laudible humanitarian ends, a heartening story.
