If this breaking news story is correct it doesn't do much for the integrity of the CofE!

From the link:
Lord Carey also wrote to Ball's brother, Michael Ball - another bishop - in 1993 saying: "I believed him to be basically innocent".

Typical prevaricating twaddle. How can you be "basically innocent"? Either you're innocent or you're not. (Perhaps some corpses are 'basically dead' - or not.) Or he may have meant that he'd only abused a handful (pardon the expression) of minors rather than the dozens and hundreds that these perverts normally molest in the major established churches. Where's the vetting? Where's the ongoing control? Others in their closed society must have had more than an inkling of what was going on. There are clearly still a lot of stones still unturned...

Ball admitted to abusing eighteen people!

Archbishop Carey "chose not to put Ball on the Church of England's "Lambeth List", which names clergymen about whom questions of suitability for ministry have been raised."

All I can say is the Bishop of Lewes (as he was) must have been mightily convincing and the AofC mightily deceived.

We should be used to hearing this stuff by now but it still shocks.

We knew that would happen after Justin Welby asked him to resign last week.

George Carey had a good innings, was well liked as AofC but was unbelievably naive about Ball; it hardly seems credible now but people were like that 25 years ago.

I was never a big fan of Carey, but he was probably foolish rather than knowingly complicit.

Yes and that is true of many people who just couldn't envisage someone they knew and respected doing what Peter Ball, and others, did.
It was also often believed that if a person gave into weakness once, and was sorry, they were not likely to do it again.

Everyone is more 'wised up' now.
